Information for NABL Associates Network (NAN)
As members of the National Association
of Bond Lawyers (“NABL”) beginning our practices, several
associates believed that there is a desire among less experienced bond
lawyers to have a forum within NABL that serves to increase
communication, education, and the exchange of ideas among our
peers. Such a forum would promote activities and programs the
would interest and encourage participation of young lawyers in NABL
events, facilitate communication and increased interaction, and enhance
the quality of the legal profession in the bond community. In
response to this need, the NABL Executive Board approved the creation of
the NABL Associates Network (a.k.a. “NAN”)
Mission Statement of the NABL
Associates Network:
The mission of NAN is to interest and
encourage participation of young lawyers in NABL, to develop and conduct
programs of value to Associates, to facilitate communication,
interaction, and the exchange of ideas among Associates nationwide, and
to enhance the quality of the legal profession in the municipal finance
community.
Membership:
NAN focuses its activities on all
current members of NABL that are within the first 8 years of municipal
finance practice. The target participants are bond lawyers with 2-8
years of municipal finance experience. Since the primary objective of
NAN is to increase education and the exchange of ideas among bond
lawyers, NAN is intended to be as inclusive as possible to increase
participation while keeping its programs meaningful.
Initiatives:
The spectrum of activities for NAN to
undertake includes independent social events, more narrowly tailored
educational materials, and an aggressive platform for publication and
speaking. While the list of potential activities and opportunities is
relatively boundless, below are a few initiatives arranged in order of
priority that we believe are central to this program:
• Develop a NAN Link on the
Current NABL Website.
The NAN link aspires to be a valuable
resource for the young bond lawyer and would provide a forum for
communication and education. For example, the web-link may
contain:
o A message board with previously asked
questions and associated answers in a format that allows a lawyer to
anonymously post a question or an answer;
o Research materials and other
publications organized by topic (including the workshop
materials);
o Articles written by members of NAN;
and
o A list of NABL committees and
opportunities to get involved in NABL.
• Devote Time at Annual NABL
Conferences to Associates.
Develop training materials and seminars
for annual NABL conferences, such as Fundamentals or the Bond
Attorney’s Workshops, catered to the development of
Associates.
• Develop Additional
Substantive Trainings Focused on the Educational and
Developmental Needs of
Associates.
Trainings may be live or via
teleconference and will provide supplemental training to the
Fundamentals and Bond Attorney’s Workshops. For instance, if the
Fundamentals Workshop is equivalent to “Bonds 101,” such
trainings will serve as “Bonds 201,” “301” and
so on. Topics may be general, timely, broad or specific. Trainings may
also be characterized as “brown bags” and provide
educational opportunities on an ongoing basis. Trainings focused
on Associates will also present an additional forum for junior bond
lawyers to develop materials, give presentations, and lead
roundtables.
