Nominations Sought for Friel Medal and Kiel Distinguished Service Award

The Bernard P. Friel Medal for distnguished service in public finance and the Frederick O. Kiel Distnguished Service Award for extraordinary service to NABL are bestowed at each year's Bond Attorneys' Workshop.   A description of the awards, their past recipients and nomination forms are all available here.  Nominations are due by Wednesday, July 15, 2009.

 

Bond Case Briefs Case of the Week

 
The City of Vallejo's chapter 9 filing was upheld by the Ninth Circuit Bankruptcy Appellate Panel despite unions' argument, among others, that the city should "have pillaged" funds, "ignoring bond covenants" (the court's words), before claiming insolvency.  And, given the lack of an agreement with the unions, it was "impracticable" for the city to have negotiated with its bondholders, said the court.  In re: City of Vallejo (6/26/09)  http://pacer.bap09.uscourts.gov click on Opinions and scroll to City of Vallejo
